Diversity Visa Program

A lottery for adults with permanent residency upon entering the U.S. after approval

What is the Diversity Visa (DV) Program?

The Diversity Visa Program, also known as the DV Lottery, is a lottery system the U.S. government draws every year to increase the representation of people underrepresented in the U.S. This program gives up to 50,000 visas randomly to selected individuals from these countries.

Those who get selected and successfully complete their immigrant visa applications obtain legal permanent resident status (green card) upon entry into the U.S.. It is free to apply and applications are often open during November and drawn March of the following year.

Important things to keep in mind

Unfortunately being selected does not guarantee legal permanent resident status as it’s entirely dependent on being able to successfully complete the visa process and entering the U.S. within a set amount of time. In some countries it may take a long time to get interviewed, causing you to miss out on the opportunity. If selected, you may only proceed with the visa application through the embassy of a country you are either a citizen or resident of.
